Extended Description

The Elizabethan Period was the golden age of the English Renaissance. Musically, it was an enormously vibrant time, reaching an international prominence and influence that wouldn’t be achieved again in English music until the 20th century. Of the numerous musical forms of the period, perhaps none was more popular than the Lute Song. Like it’s 19th century cousin, the German Lieder (voice with piano accompaniment), a lute song tells a story; unlike the Lieder, the accompaniment does not vary from verse to verse to musically portray and support the text.
